So while we had the kitchen in total disarray I decided to redo the countertops too! I have been looking up information about Rust-Oleum Countertop Transformations for a while and decided to pull the trigger.
Here is the before of our lovely beige counters. They really weren't awful, but I wasn't crazy about them with our new white cabinets.
We considered different countertop options, but didn't want to invest a lot of money. Granite was out of the question. We thought about granite tiles, but knew it would be a while before Brian had the time to work on that, plus it is still pretty expensive. So.... enter our countertop transformations kit:
For just over $200 (used a coupon) we got brand new looking countertops! Originally we wanted to go with the charcoal, but we chose Java Stone. A co-worker poitned out that the color of the chips matched our tiles and I am so happy we chose this color. The process isn't hard, but very messy!
First you sand your current countertops (pretty easy, especially since I have become a sanding master over the past month)
Next, you wipe the counters down and apply the adhesive base coat. One tip on this step if any of you are thinking of doing this: Make sure you apply a THICK coat. We had a problem with the counter still showing through and having to do touch ups. I dont have a picture of this step because the adhesive dries rather quickly, so it is really a two person job for step two and three.
Then you apply the chips (this is the messy part). The kit includes a chip dispenser that looks like this:
You fill it up with the chips and crank the wheel to completely coat the countertop (floor, sink, dog, husband... everything will have these chips on it!) with chips. Then you let it dry overnight. It will look something like this. Notice the chips on the floor??
Sand, sand, sand...
Add epoxy top coat and....

I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! Especially for the price. Now we just have to wait for it to dry. You are supposed to wait two days to touch it and seven days for heavy use. It shouldn't be too bad considering we will be in Montgomery for Easter weekend.
I am still working on the cabinets. I pulled the doors up today to start installing the hardware... and the paper is stuck to them on one side!! Looks like more sanding and touching up is in my future.
On a side note, Brian only has two more weeks of school! The baseball team he is helping coach is going to the play offs. YAY! Isn't he so cute as Coach Wilson? (He will kill me for this :D)
